Fundraising: Donors Choose

What is Donors Choose?

Donors Choose was started by a history teacher. In 2000, Charles Best, a teacher at a Bronx public high school, wanted his students to read Little House on the Prairie. As he was making photocopies of the one book he could procure, Charles thought about all the money he and his colleagues were spending on books, art supplies, and other materials. And he figured there were people out there who’d want to help — if they could see where their money was going. Charles sketched out a website where teachers could post classroom project requests, and donors could choose the ones they wanted to support. His colleagues posted the first 11 requests. Then it spread. Today, we’re open to every public school in America.

Several Licton Springs teachers have projects posted on the Donors Choose site at any given time.

Fundraising: Sir Herbert Read Consortium

What is the Licton Springs K-8 Sir Herbert Read Consortium?

A long-term fund established to financially support academic enhancement programs and grounds improvement projects at our school that are not paid for by the state, city or school district.

How will my donation be used?

The SHR Consortium acts as a “bank” for Licton Springs K-8’s class activities such as field trips, and teachers can request funds for events or for scholarships so that all students can participate in fee-based activities. Sir Herbert Read is equivalent to the PTA /PTSA of a public school.

Sir Herbert Read also supports increased communications among Licton Springs K-8’s families and staff members by supporting the Licton Springs K-8 Site Council.

Sir Herbert Read helps Licton Springs K-8 maintain its commitment to retaining our alternative, hands-on approach to education in the face of the greater community’s emphasis on test scores. Our projects are community-developed and serve the needs of our families.  This funding will also be used for guest speakers, Native American curriculum, books, and other enrichment which supports the school’s mission and vision. Sir Herbert Read is supported by tax-deductible contributions from parents, alumni and friends of Licton Springs K-8. Contributions from the local community and businesses are also gratefully accepted.

Please Support the Sir Herbert Read Consortium at Licton Springs K-8! The Sir Herbert Read Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Tax ID# 91-7900952.
