    01/31/21 LSK8 Weekly Update
    Published on Feb 1, 2021 09:09

    Good evening, Licton Springs K-8 Families,

    I hope you are having a great weekend.

    Black History & Excellence Month & Black Lives Matter at School Week:  February begins next week and we will be celebrating Black History and Excellence month with a February assembly.  We will also celebrate Black Lives Matter at School Week this week.  If you have any feedback for the Principal regarding the programming taking place in your child’s class, please call the school or email me directly at

    Office of African-American Male Achievement Listen and Learn Forums:  The AAMA will begin hosting Listen and Learn Forums for Black families.  They invite Black families to participate and collectively envision what an educational environment looks like for Black boys and teens to thrive. Your voice will help build the office's intentional, long-term plan. These forums are focused on the voices of Black families in SPS.  To learn more and to register, visit this SPS webpage;

    Great News—Transportation for LSK8 Continues!:  With the significant budget deficit the school district faces as a result of COVID and online learning, the school board proposed removing all yellow bus transportation for Option Schools as a cost-saving measure.  This would have been a massive equity issue for two K-8s that serve a majority of students and families of color and students eligible for free or reduced meals and devastatingly altered our school.  Fortunately, the School Board realized this and exempted LSK8 and the other K-8 school from cuts related to transportation.  This means that despite our move to Ballard, LSK8 students will all receive yellow bus transportation if they are outside the walking zone.

    PTO Meeting Tuesday, Feb 2nd:  The next PTO meeting will be held next Tuesday, Feb. 2nd at 6pm.  We hope you will join us.  Emily will be sharing her monthly school updates and the process for our consideration of a school name change, which was the consensus choice last year in preparation for our move.  We will also be discussing our role as a Title I School.  To join, go to the link here:  please call the office for the passcode.

    Coat drive:  Looking for free coats? Join Urban Family and Tone Wroten (former UW and NBA player) on February 6th from 11am—3pm. They will be giving away free coats. Go to to register.

    UW School Psychology Grade School Partnership:  Our school is partnering with UW School Psychology graduate program and will have graduate level school psychology trainees working with teachers and staff as school volunteers providing school and classroom level social emotional interventions and supports. Please see the attached form and complete and return by this Friday only if you would like to opt your student out from these activities and supports.  If you have any questions, please reach out to school social worker, Nora Jungbluth.

    Free ORCA Cards for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students!:  Our Middle School students may now visit any of the district’s technology centers to pick up an ORCA card.  The card may be used for the rest of the school year.  This covers unlimited youth fare on bus, rail, streetcar ferry and Access transit.  Here’s a link to the hours and locations of the district family resource centers:

    Clubs:  Clubs are now up and running during social time for 5/6th grade students. The students chose to have an Anime/Manga club and a Video Game club. All 5/6th graders can come to their social time to participate.

    Lunchtime Socials: All grades are welcome to go to their open lunch hour to social with their friends. Please see below for your scholars scheduled day.
